For me the key was joining a strong angel group when I was a young investor. With a good group you diversify your portfolio faster and you learn the ropes much faster than you would on your own :-)
As a college student keen in the space, and curious to learn more about investing, this was such a great summary of how to evaluate risks and covered a lot of basic terms, giving me a great place to start!
